Customs destroy purported Trezeguet 1998 World Cup final jersey

The number 20 jersey David Trezeguet purportedly wore when France beat Brazil 3-0 in the final of the 1998 World Cup was destroyed by customs officers, who took it for a fake, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

Olivier Demolis, a collector of famous footballer jerseys living in eastern France, told Le Dauphin Libere newspaper he bought the jersey last year on eBay, an online auction site.

After a bit of haggling back and forth with the Brazilian vendor he bagged the jersey for 7,350 euros.

"He's a very well-known vendor and the jersey was official. You could see that, so I cracked. For me, it was the ultimate piece in my collection," Demolis said.

The professional electrician, who has around ten jerseys worn by members of Les Bleus, including two from former captain Zinedine Zidane, tracked the jersey online after it was shipped by courier to France.

When he saw it had arrived he went to pick it up at the local customs office - only to be told it no longer existed.

"I was told that the jersey had been destroyed as a fake by customs officials. I went mad," he said.

French customs told Demolis they became suspicious because the stitching on the jersey was of poor quality.

He believes they acted too hastily and is seeking compensation for his loss - both financial and the nixing of a "big kid's" dream.
