FA Cup holders Chelsea went out of the tournament on Saturday as they lost their fourth-round replay to Everton in a penalty shoot-out.
It was 0-0 after 90 minutes, and Frank Lampard seemed to have won it when he put Chelsea ahead after 103 minutes.
But with two minutes of extra-time remaining, Leighton Baines flicked a magnificent free-kick into the top corner.
Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole failed form the spot in the shoot- out to send Everton through.
Chelsea were sluggish in the early stages, with Didier Drogba, restored to the starting line-up after being left on the bench for Monday's game at Fulham, a frustrated, distant figure.
A knee injury, though, seemed to enliven him, and by the end of the first half, he was in heroic mode, battering into defenders and leading the line.
Everton looked the brighter in the first half, with Seamus Coleman troubling Cole, but Chelsea the better chances.
Phil Jagielka headed a Lampard free-kick against his own post, with John Terry blasting the follow-up high over the bar.
Florent Malouda was denied by a fine save from Tim Howard after Drogba, at last making a worthwhile contribution after half an hour, dinked a ball over the top for him.
Then, in the final moment of the half, Ramires went down in the box under challenge from Howard. It seemed there was contact, but referee Phil Dowd booked the Brazilian for simulation.
Chelsea were far more threatening after the break, and Howard made excellent saves in quick succession from Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic.
But in the final minute it was Marouane Fellaini who jabbed the ball over the line, only for the goal to be - correctly - ruled out for offside.
Chelsea renewed their assault in extra-time. Lampard sent one effort just wide and then, finally, after 103 minutes, he lashed in the opener as Everton failed to deal with a ball into the box.
But in the 118th minute, Baines flicked a free-kick over the wall to equalize.
Barely five minutes later, though, Baines missed his penalty in the shoot-out. Howard then saved from Anelka and when Cole missed the target, Phil Neville stepped up to send Everton through.
Everton will meet Reading in the fifth round.
