Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will captain England for the first time in their friendly international against Denmark in Copenhagen on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old takes over from the injured Rio Ferdinand and vice-captain Steven Gerrard.
"I am very proud, it is quite unexpected," Lampard said. "I've been in the squad for a long time time now and I've go to a point where I am one of the old stagers. It will be one of the proudest moments of my career.
"I'll try and do what I do for Chelsea. I'm not going to change just because of the armband. The team will always need leaders and I will try and do my usual job but try and have an influence on the team."
England manager Fabio Capello said he had monitored Lampard's performances recently after the midfielder was out for a long period at the beginning of the season.
"In the last five games he has played, he has improved a lot," Capello said. "I watched him against Liverpool (last weekend) and he played very well. Probably he is fresher than the other players."
Capello said Arsenal's Jack Wilshere will make his first England start alongside Lampard in midfield, while Ashley Cole will become England's most capped full-back when he starts the match.
