Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon says he cannot wait to take on Germany on Wednesday evening, as his most memorable match was against Die Mannschaft in the 2006 World Cup semi-final.

The shot-stopper knows it will not be an easy match for the Azzurri, but they having to lose.

"I am happy to return after the injury," Buffon said to La Gazzetta Dello Sport. "I am back in the national side, and I hope to get a lot of satisfactions here.

"The semi-final against Germany on 4 July 2006 was the most important game of my career. It symbolised revenge for our emigrants in Germany, our sporting revenge, and it was the best night bar none."

"They [Germany] have a lot of certainties coming into this game and they come from some really good results. We have changed coach and look. We have nothing to lose, we can demonstrate we are competitive and take some steps forwards.

"It won't be easy but it is very motivating. Qualification to the European Championship is there for the taking, things have gone better than I expected they would after the World Cup.

The 32-year-old admits he would like to be involved with the national team for at least one more World Cup campaign, possibly two.

"I would like to play in five World Cups, and maybe in a sixth as the third-choice goalkeeper," he continued.

Superman believes having Thiago Motta in the Azzurri line-up will provide a boost to the side, despite him being born in Brazil.

"Football and the world going in this direction; they are globalising," Buffon explained. The important thing is to respect the rules.

"As for this specific case, having a player like Thiago Motta with us is a big boost."
