the 2012 BMW X1 will be delayed until late 2011 — at the earliest — BMW confirmed for Inside Line on Wednesday.
Unexpectedly high demand in Europe has put the brakes on U.S. availability of the small German crossover. Word of the delay coincided with the announcement that the new BMW X1 xDrive28i will be the first of the "28" models to get the new generation of four-cylinder gasoline engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
The compact crossover gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which develops 245 horsepower, replacing the 3.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-6. BMW says this gives the four-cylinder engine a significant torque upgrade over the previous six-cylinder engine, with reduced fuel consumption and emissions. The 0-62-mph sprint time is 6.1 seconds with the standard six-speed manual transmission and 6.5 seconds with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission.
The TwinPower Turbo engines have an all-aluminum crankcase, twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection with solenoid injectors.
BMW also announced the debut of an M Sports package for the X1, available for all X1s, no matter the engine. Details include sports suspension calibration and 17-inch double-spoke M alloy wheels or 18-inch double-spoke M alloy wheels. It also features an M aerodynamics package.
Get ready to play the waiting game for the 2012 BMW X1
Widespread availability ofown 2.0 liter turbo power plant is going to cause BMW massive heartburn. Hyundai's turbo unit can already be found in the Sorento, and now it's making its way into the Sportage. It makes considerably more power than the German mill, it's got a broad, meaty torque curve, and the Kia products give nothing away in terms of engineering, assembly, style, performance or value.
Now, a lot of the Bimmer Fanboys will tell me that I'm an idiot, because the Bavarian machines are prestige pieces with enormous cachet and respect. But that throne is really beginning to teeter. And whether the guys from Spartanburg like it or not, more and more prospective buyers are cross shopping. And they don't think the price differential is justified; not even close. Besides; the Kia products are far more assertively styled by a man who really knows what he's doing. Peter Schreyer migrated to Kia after amassing an impressive portfolio at Audi.
