Borussia Dortmund conceded a last-minute goal in a 1-1 draw at Kaiserslautern Saturday to see their lead at the top of the Bundesliga trimmed to 10 points.
Arjen Robben struck twice as Bayern Munich meanwhile trounced Hoffenheim 4-0 while Bayer Leverkusen ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Eintracht Frankfurt to keep their outside Bundesliga hopes alive.
Dortmund thought they had secured three points at Kaiserslautern when Sven Bender struck a left-foot goal nine minutes from time after the home side had failed to clear a low cross from the right from Lukasz Piszczek.
But Juergen Klopp's side then had defender Neven Subotic sent off four minutes later for a harsh second booking after Srdjan Lakic went to ground, and Jan Moravek belted in a last-minute equalizer from the edge of the area following a corner.
It was the second successive draw for Dortmund who were goalless at home to Schalke eight days ago.
"I have to say we probably didn't deserve more than a point today," said Klopp.
"It would have been a fortunate win. We were the better team but we didn't create many chances and in the end it was not enough. I am more annoyed with Subotic's sending off." The foul for the second yellow card was "nothing", Klopp added.
Dortmund now have 52 points, with Leverkusen on 42 and Bayern up to third on 39. Both Mainz and Hanover could overtake Bayern with wins on Sunday.
The draw moves Kaiserslautern a point off the relegation zone.
Bayern raced into a two-goal lead against visiting Hoffenheim through Bundesliga top scorer Mario Gomez and Thomas Mueller before Arjen Robben bagged his double after the break.
First-half goals from Simon Rolfes and Renato Augusto before a late Hanno Balitsch effort earned Leverkusen - with Michael Ballack on the bench - a 3-0 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Bayern had Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery playing together for the first time this season for the visit of Hoffenheim, while recent-signing Luiz Gustavo also started against his former club.
Robben provided the pass for Gomez to notch his 17th goal of the season in the second minute, and Ribery was involved in the move which led to Mueller's goal in the 15th.
Robben made it three with a trademark goal in the 63rd when he cut in from the left before hitting a left-foot shot just inside the box.
The Dutch winger then wrapped up the scoring nine minutes from time when he took a pass from Ribery to curl the ball in from 15 metres to put last week's 3-2 defeat at Cologne behind them.
"We played well over the whole 90 minutes. Then you can see how we are capable of playing," said coach Louis van Gaal.
Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes left Germany captain Ballack and striker Stefan Kiessling out of the side for the visit to Frankfurt. While Kiessling came on for the last six minutes, Ballack stayed on the bench in an impressive Leverkusen performance.
Bottom side Borussia Moenchengladbach and fellow strugglers both suffered defeats to move deeper into relegation danger.
Moenchengladbach enjoyed a ninth-minute lead through midfielder Igor de Camargo at St Pauli, but the Belgian was then sent off in the 21st minute for head-butting Matthias Lehmann.
The Hamburg club levelled when Max Kruse volleyed home in the 38th, before Gerald Asamoah and Lehmann struck in the 53rd and 58th minutes for a 3-1 win.
Stuttgart slumped to a 4-1 home defeat to Nuremberg, Timmy Simons, Julian Schieber, Timothy Chandler and Mehmet Ekici sharing the goals.
The results leave Moenchengladbach on 16 points and Stuttgart on 19, three points adrift of Cologne who play Sunday.
