Germany's Loew to pick tried and trusted for Italy test

Germany coach Joachim Loew does not plan to pick an experimental side against Italy Wednesday in the first friendly of the year.

Loew said Sunday he wanted to start with a team used to playing together, although youngsters such as uncapped midfielder Sven Bender are likely to be tried at some point.

"In general the team will be one that has already played together," Loew said ahead of the squad's get-together at Kamen ahead of the match in nearby Dortmund.

Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has dropped out of the squad after pulling a ligament in his right knee in Saturday's 3-2 Bundesliga defeat to Cologne.

Loew has decided not to replace the 25-year-old striker who is now the Bundesliga's leading scorer this season after notching his 16th league goal in Bayern's defeat.

A question mark remains over Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira who has taken a knock on his knee, but Loew said he did not expect the injury to present a problem.

Loew has called up five players from Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund for the international at their home ground.

Bender, the only uncapped player in the squad, is joined by Dortmund defenders Mats Hummels and Marcel Schmelzer, and midfielders Mario Goetze and Kevin Grosskreutz, who have a mere six caps between them.

"I was surprised to be nominated because nothing indicated it," said 21-year-old Bender who has impressed Loew with his ball-winning abilities in midfield.

"I am glad to be part of it for the first time. There are so many good players here, you can pick up a lot from them."

Competition is particular strong in central midfield and is likely to intensify if and when captain Michael Ballack, who has been left out of the squad this time, returns.

Loew, however, said he was not thinking of using Bastian Schweinsteiger in the playmaker role he fills at Bayern Munich, but would continue to be play him in a more defensive midfield position.

"We have (Mesut) Oezil, (Toni) Kroos, Goetze, (Lewis) Holtby in attacking positions. Bastian as a number 6 brings stability and organization to the side," Loew said.
