While Real edged past Racing at Santiago Bernabeu, Josep Guardiola's Barca could only muster a 1-1 draw later in the evening
Real applied the pressure to their great rivals earlier on Saturday after securing a 1-0 success over Racing Santander
Gonzalo Hugain's close-range effort proved to be decisive as the home side claimed all three points
Although Manuel Pellegrini dominated for the remainder of the match they failed to add to their tally, but it was still enough to claim all three points
Barcelona missed the chance to make Real's stay at the top a short-lived experience after letting a one-goal lead slip at San Mames
Xavi came close to giving the visitors a first-half lead when he latched onto Lionel Messi's clever back post pass
Dani Alves did put Barca in front shortly after the interval, however, Athletic deservedly levelled matters nine minutes later
Gaizka Toquero's well-taken finish past Victor Valdes ensured the home side finished the match with a share of the spoils
Title-chasing Sevilla survived a late fightback from Tenerife to secure a 2-1 Liga victory
Manolo Jimenez's side took control just after the half hour when Diego Perotti struck the opener
Renato then doubled their lead three minutes after the break and the three points looked guaranteed
But there were some nervous moments for the Andalusians late on after Nino pulled a goal back with 15 minutes still left on the clock
Andres Guardado struck a dramatic last-minute penalty to give Deportivo La Coruna all three points in a lively clash with Atletico Madrid
Depor have enjoyed an excellent start to the season and came into the game in fifth place in La Liga, but they looked to be in trouble early on as Sergio Aguero struck after just three minutes to give Atletico a much-needed boost
Miguel Angel Lotina's side came back into it when Diego Colotto equalised after 20 minutes and, just when the game appeared to be heading towards a stalemate, Pablo brought down Alberto Lopo and Guardado kept his cool after Atletico's fierce protests - which saw Cleber Santana sent off and Sanchez Flores race onto the pitch - to coolly fire the winner.
