CARY, N.C. -- Authorities say a man who took several people hostage at a North Carolina bank was shot to death as he tried to leave with a woman with a gun pointed at her.
Cary Police Chief Pat Bazemore said none of the hostages was injured during the three-hour standoff Thursday in the Raleigh western suburb.
Authorities say the standoff began after an attempted bank robbery. She says killing the suspect is not how authorities had hoped the standoff would end.
Bazemore says seven people were inside the bank and six of them were taken hostage. The seventh hid from the gunman and was giving information to police about what was happening in the bank.
Bazemore says the hostages are talking to police and being reunited with their families.
